At midnight on New Year's Eve, alone in a rented room in New York, I collected good-luck rituals from different cultures — Europe, Latin America, East Asia — and performed them all simultaneously.
For a few minutes, traditions from across the world were folded and compressed into one body, one small square room.
Half-believing, half-doubting. Simply trying to carry it through — stubbornly reaching toward something.
