In January 2026, Sapporo and New York were both buried under heavy snow at the same time.
Standing in the snow in Sapporo, I had a thought: what if I could introduce you to the snow from New York? Maybe you wouldn't feel so alone.
I put out an urgent call on Instagram, asking friends in New York to send me footage of their snow — and to tell me how it felt, what it looked like, what it meant to them. I edited it into a short video, packed a projector, and went out into the streets of Sapporo at night to find the right spot — somewhere flat enough to project on, somewhere that felt right for two snows to meet.
I projected the New York snow onto a patch of Sapporo snow, and sat quietly beside it to watch.
The first time, I just sat still — keeping the snow company as we watched together. The second time, I noticed the uneven surface was distorting the image, so I reached out and smoothed the snow with my hands while the video played. At some point, a passerby approached. I stepped aside and gestured for them to pass. They did — quietly, carefully, without disturbing the projection.
I don't know if Yuki-chan felt anything. But I hope the introduction was made.
